The image above shows median 401(k) balances by state from 2008 to 2011. American retirement savings increased from 2008 to 2011 in all states. You can also see how strongly retirement savings recovered from the low at beginning-of-year 2009. In the full study, we also take a look at how savings in red states and blue states compare, and how savings in swing states compare to the rest of the country.
